The Salkantay is an old Inca trail, little used nowadays except for a small number of tourists. Our group comprised of a bunch of Spanish blokes, and a Swiss couple (Beat and Barbara, who we later met up with by chance in Southern Chile). The first day involved a hike up the valley towards the Salkantay pass.
