Baños
is a resort town in the Yungas region, mainly catering for local tourists
who come to bathe in the hot pools and buy trinkets. Like many places
in South America, the markets had long rows of stalls selling exactly
the same products, which in the case of Baños was candy made of
sugar cane and sugar cane juice. In the market we tried Cuye (Guinea Pig),
which is a popular dish in Ecuador and neighbouring countries. The waitress
laughed when Maureen asked for a fork, as it is almost impossible to stick
one into a Cuye as they have the consistency of a rubber tyre.
